Poetry of the Impossible with Maria Jastrzebska.

10 am – 1 pm. Saturday 17th January.
Brighton Writers’ Centre.

Price £40 or £30 Concessionary Rates and Friends of THE SOUTH

What is a prose poem? A lazy option for poets who can't be bothered with line breaks? Or a challenging and demanding form in its own right? Paul Valery described it as " the coming and going between two worlds", while Charles Simic said the prose poem is: "the result of two contradictory impulses, prose and poetry and therefore cannot exist but it does.” Despite its bad press in the UK the prose poem is beginning to gain ground. THE SOUTH now offer you the opportunity to come read, discuss and try your hand at the prose poem. This is a workshop for experienced writers and beginners alike.

About the Workshop Leader

Maria Jastrzebska was born in Warsaw, Poland and grew up in London. She now lives in Brighton. Her previous collections include POSTCARDS FROM POLAND (Working Press) ‘HOME FROM HOME’ (Flarestack), SYRENA (Redbeck Press) and I'll Be back before You Know It (Pighog Press Nov 2008). She was co-editor of ‘Forum Polek’ a bilingual anthology of women’s writing, Poetry South (2007) and Whoosh! (Pighog Press/QWS/SOUTH). She founded SOUTH POLE and is chair of Queer Writing South. Her poems and translations have been widely published in anthologies and journals in the U.K and translated into Finnish, French, Japanese, Polish, Romanian and Slovenian. Moniza Alvi has described Maria's prose poems as "highly original -claustrophobic, disorienting and razor-edged" (Poetry International Web).
